Stucco rarely fails without warning. The walls that end up needing major work almost always spent a season or two showing signs that were easy to miss — or easy to postpone. Here are the seven warnings worth acting on, from the subtle to the urgent.
1. Staining That Grows After Rain
A stain that darkens or spreads after every rainfall is marking an active water path. Stains below windows, gutters and horizontal details are the classic locations. This is the single most valuable early warning stucco gives.
2. White, Powdery Deposits
Efflorescence — white salt deposits on the surface — means water is moving through the stucco and evaporating, leaving minerals behind. The deposits are harmless; the moisture movement behind them is not.
3. Soft Spots
Press the wall. Sound stucco is hard; stucco that yields or crumbles under finger pressure has lost its integrity to moisture. Soft spots always grow — they never stabilize on their own.
4. A Hollow Sound
Tap the wall with your knuckles. Solid stucco sounds solid; a hollow drum sound means the stucco has separated from the wall behind it and will eventually fall. Hollow areas are a removal-and-rebuild item, and a falling hazard on upper walls.
5. Cracks That Change
A hairline that stays a hairline is a maintenance item. A crack that widens, lengthens or multiplies season over season is telling you something is moving. Photograph it with a date; if it changes, get it assessed.
6. Bulging or Blistering
Sections pushing outward indicate moisture breaking bonds from behind the surface. Bulging stucco is advanced deterioration — schedule assessment promptly.
7. Interior Symptoms
Stained drywall, peeling paint or musty smells on the interior face of an exterior wall can trace back to stucco failure outside. By the time water shows indoors, it has already crossed the whole assembly — treat this one as urgent.
The Pattern
Notice what every sign has in common: early action is cheap, late action is not. A twice-yearly walk around your home — spring and fall — catches all seven at the affordable stage. And if you spot any of them now, photos sent through our contact form get you a prompt, honest read on what you are looking at.
